WASHINGTON – Council on National Security and Immigration (CNSI) today released a statement regarding the Trump Administration's actions on immigration enforcement and raising concern that recent shifts in federal mission priorities may be placing pressure on core national security functions across multiple agencies.
“CNSI has consistently supported appropriate, lawful border and immigration enforcement. At the same time, securing our borders and addressing immigration challenges should not undermine the national security missions that protect Americans from complex and evolving threats. A balanced approach is essential to ensure both priorities are met.
“The substantial new funding for immigration enforcement signed into law this year should reduce, not increase, the need for resources from other missions. Significant personnel shifts among federal agencies are pulling resources away from efforts that combat terrorism, illicit narcotics, cybercrime, human trafficking, and other transnational threats. These missions are critical to public safety and require sustained, specialized focus. When agencies are redirected for long periods, their capacity to address these challenges can be weakened, with long-term consequences for national security.
“Immigration enforcement is vital and must be implemented in a way that complements, rather than strains, broader national security. The country’s security depends on ensuring that immigration initiatives and core security missions remain aligned and mutually reinforcing.”
