WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Council on National Security and Immigration (CNSI) today released a statement following President Trump’s signing of the tax and immigration package that includes many of his priorities as well as those of congressional Republicans. The law includes provisions that provide critical investments in securing the U.S. border and modernizing immigration infrastructure, and CNSI leaders urge Congress to quickly move forward with other needed immigration reforms.
“While CNSI leaders have differing views over various provisions of the legislative package, we support the bill’s investments in border technology, increases in compensation for immigration enforcement personnel, and financing of the long-overdue entry-exit system at airports. We also welcome the bill’s inclusion of funding for additional immigration judges, which will help reduce backlogs and provide timely, fair adjudication for individuals navigating the process.
“Given these investments, and the significant progress already made in securing our southern border, we believe it is time to move forward to address other needed reforms of the immigration system. The space is now open for bipartisan, proactive reforms that reflect our national values, strengthen our economy, and advance our national security. That means expanding legal immigration pathways to meet the workforce needs of key industries, including high-skilled professionals, and both agricultural and essential workers; resolving the status of Dreamers and Documented Dreamers; and honoring our commitments to our Afghan allies who risked their lives alongside U.S. forces.
“With key elements of enforcement infrastructure now resourced and underway, we must turn toward aligning our immigration laws with America’s economic needs, national security priorities, and long-term strategic interests.”
